The legalization of cannabis, Igbo, weewee, weed or marijuana as it is fondly called has become a debate topic around the world because of its health and economic benefits…

Cannabis comes from a plant called Cannabis sativa with origin from eastern Asia, it came into Nigeria during the cosmopolitan distribution due to widespread cultivation.

The active chemical in cannabis that gives the “high” feeling is THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol).

The medicinal benefits of cannabis have been the strongest arguments for its legalization as the green leaf and oil keep getting kudos for its pain relieving properties.

Cannabis is the most commonly used illegal drug in the world. The main argument against its legalization are concerns of increased usage of the drug which will most likely lead to a rise in crime and a negative impact on public health.

Some long-term effects of the usage of cannabis may result in impaired concentration, drug-induced psychosis (seeing or hearing things that do not exist or are distorted), and disorganized thinking or speech.

Having gone through the pros and cons of legalizing cannabis, would you push for the legalization of cannabis in Nigeria or stand against it?

  1. I don’t think cannabis should be legalized in Nigeria because of the following reasons:

    1. It usefulness to our health is lesser than the damage it can cause to our health.

    2. Anything introduced into Nigeria is always taken in excess.

    3. If cannabis is legalized in Nigeria, teenagers will begin to abuse their mental health with cannabis.

    4. More people will have the opportunity to misbehave everywhere if cannabis is legalized in Nigeria.
